Help grow the impact of social enterprise in Tasmania

Our members, both Tasmanian social enterprise members and associate members, help us to create a stronger community that supports each other, and puts people and planet first. We are stronger with the input of everyone setting the direction for Tasmania, and through this membership, we can also ensure that Tasmania’s perspectives influence the national strategy too.

Who can be a member

Applications for Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania membership are open to:

  • Tasmanian Social Enterprise Members – any Tasmanian-based entity, or social enterprise that operates in Tasmania, verified to meet the People and Planet First global standards
  • Associate Members – any organisation or individual aged over 18.

Voice and vote

Upon joining all Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania members will be introduced to our digital chat platform, where we share knowledge, resources, insights and collectively support outcomes across the sector. This is where you can raise your successes and your challenges and help shape the direction of the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania as we emerge.

Build the membership you’d like to see

This is a new membership model and we will run a project to test, learn and evolve it with our Members with the following aims:

  • Grow the breadth and depth of participation in Tasmania
  • Strengthen behaviours and processes to centre social and environmental justice, and to navigate decision-making and change productively
  • Strengthen the fabric of peaks and networks needed to drive big-picture shifts in Tasmania.

Reciprocal membership

This allows organisations and individuals to apply to join Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania and the national peak body, Social Enterprise Australia, at no extra cost (if your registered address is Tasmania for organisations, or your home address for individuals) – and any other state or territory social enterprise peak body where they operate.

Tasmania is one of the three states taking part at this stage, alongside Queensland and Victoria, with the Northern Territory joining soon.

If you are applying to join Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania and are based in Tasmania, you will be joining both SECTAS and Social Enerprise Australia. If you would like to apply to join any additional participating peak bodies, you’ll have the option to do this at half price. If you’re based in the Northern Territory you can apply to join now, and access any benefits later.

Why is People and Planet First verification required for Social Enterprise Members?

The Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania, Social Enterprise Australia, and all the state and territory social enterprise peak bodies endorsed the five global standards for social enterprise in 2024. State and territory peak bodies also became local verification partners for People and Planet First – which coordinates verification worldwide.

Thhis standard was adopted because they are:

  • Independent: No single organisation sets the standards and verifies social enterprises. The standards are collectively owned by a global network. In Australia, state and territory peak bodies use the standards to verify social enterprises.
  • Clear: The standards set the bar on what a social enterprise is, in a way that is visible and easy to understand.
  • Collective: The standards are collectively governed by an Official Partner Network. Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania is in the process of becoming an Official Partner and a benefit of being our member is having a voice in them.
  • Global: The standards cross borders and mean recognition and opportunities within and beyond Australia.

For Social Enterprise Members, the cost of verification is included in your Social Enterprise Australia annual membership fee.

It is important to note that the Social Enterprise Network of Tasmania had endorsed this in May 2024.

What is involved in verification when part of your membership application?

First, apply to become a Social Enterprise Member of the Social Enteprise Collective of Tasmania.

We will provide a link to get verified at the right point in the process. The link will prompt you to:

    1. Create a public profile on the Good Market website. Good Market is the independent platform that manages the verification process. This step will take about 30-60 minutes. It is relatively straightforward but requires access to broad-ranging information about your enterprise. You can save a draft and return later, and edit responses after submission. Make sure to check the box for People and Planet First verification on the last page of the form.
    2. You will then see a prompt to pay a verification fee (this will be waived as it’s part of your membership).
    3. Complete the People and Planet First verification form. Go to your account page on Good Market, open the verification form and answer questions for each of the five standards. Keep answers direct and aligned with the standards. You must score a minimum of 1 out of 5 for each question to be verified. This step will take 1-2 hours to complete. You can save a draft and return later. You will need access to financial, business and governance information about your organisation, including evidence to upload in support of your application – for example business plan, policies, financial reports.
    4. Your application will then be assessed. Local verifiers (state and territory social enterprise peak bodies in Australia) will review your application and support you through the process. If your application meets the five standards, you will receive a welcome pack with verification certificate and badge, and you will be listed on the global directory of verified social enterprises.

My organisation is already verified - do I still need to pay for membership?

Yes – but renewal of your verification will be extended to align with your membership renewal. For example, if you were verified on 1 March 2025 and you become a Social Enterprise Member on 1 April 2025, your verification renewal will not be due until 1 April 2026.

Why should I join SECTAS and the national peak body at the same time?

By joining both the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania, and the national peak, you are involved at the national and state or territory level.

Social Enterprise Australia advocates for and connects the sector, Australia-wide. State and territory social enterprise peak bodies advocate for and connect the sector in their areas. Members of Social Enterprise Australia have a voice on national issues, while Members of state or territory peaks have a voice on state or territory issues.

Why does reciprocal membership not extend across all states and territories?

We have reciprocal membership arrangements in place with states and territories that want and are able to at this time, and where agreements have been reached.

Social Enteprise Australia continues to explore the potential for a united approach across all social enterprise peak bodies in Australia.

I operate in a state or territory as well as Tasmania, but as there is no reciprocal arrangement in place, can I still join?

Of course you can still join.

This membership page is to join the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania, and Social Enterprise Australia, as well as any state or territory peaks that are eligible at this time.

    If a state or territory that you operate in is not listed, you can find them and join their peak body directly at;
