Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania

Social Enterprise Collective Tasmania (SECTAS) is more than just a network—it’s a movement. We are a passionate, unstoppable force dedicated to strengthening the social enterprise sector across Tasmania. From Hobart to Launceston, Devonport to Burnie, and every community in between, we are bringing together social entrepreneurs, changemakers, and supporters of good business who believe that business can and should be a force for good. We know that when we stand together, share our knowledge, and amplify our collective impact, we can reshape the way Tasmania does business.

Building a Thriving Social Enterprise Sector in Tasmania

Social enterprises are the heartbeat of Tasmania’s economy and communities. They create jobs, tackle social challenges, and drive environmental sustainability—all while running businesses with purpose. At SECTAS, we believe that social enterprise isn’t an alternative model; it’s the future of business as usual.

We are not just another organisation—we are a collective of passionate doers and dreamers who believe in the power of impact-led business. SECTAS is about working together to share resources, insights, and opportunities so that social enterprises across Tasmania can thrive. By connecting enterprises from Hobart to Launceston, from the Huon Valley to the North-West Coast, we are building a vibrant, unstoppable network that fuels collaboration, innovation, and meaningful change.

Our Focus Areas

Sharing Knowledge & Strengthing the Sector

Tasmania’s social enterprises are bold, innovative, and deeply connected to their communities. From ethical fashion brands in Hobart to circular economy initiatives in Devonport, our sector is leading the way in creating solutions for a better world. SECTAS is committed to providing spaces—both online and offline—where enterprises can share experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Through peer-to-peer learning, networking events, and digital collaboration, we are building a strong, resilient ecosystem where knowledge flows freely and everyone lifts each other up.

Collective Advocacy for Lasting Change

For social enterprises to thrive, we need the right policies, investment opportunities, and public recognition. SECTAS ensures that social enterprises have a strong, unified voice in Tasmania. We are not just lobbying for change—we are driving it. Through bold conversations with government leaders in Hobart, partnerships with councils in Launceston, and deep engagement with regional communities, we are making sure that social enterprise is recognised as a key pillar of Tasmania’s economy and social fabric.

Celebrating and Amplifying Impact

Social enterprises are changing lives and landscapes across Tasmania. From empowering marginalised communities in Glenorchy to reducing waste in the Cradle Coast region, their impact is undeniable. SECTAS is here to amplify these stories, to ensure that the world sees and values the real, tangible change that social enterprise creates. Through storytelling, media engagement, and events, we will shine a spotlight on the businesses and individuals making a difference every single day.

Why Social Enterprise Matters to Tasmania

Tasmania is built on resilience, innovation, and community. Social enterprises embody these values, offering sustainable business models that reinvest in people and the planet. As the state faces challenges such as economic disparity, environmental concerns, and workforce shortages, social enterprise presents a bold, hopeful way forward.

The impact of social enterprise is not just local—it’s global. According to the Schwab Foundation’s Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship, there are approximately 10 million social enterprises worldwide, generating around $2 trillion in annual revenue and employing over 200 million people—accounting for 6% of the global formal workforce. These enterprises have positively impacted more than 891 million lives over the past 25 years. Social enterprises are tackling global challenges head-on, and Tasmania has the opportunity to be a leader in this movement.

By fostering a strong social enterprise sector, we can:

  • Boost regional economies by creating sustainable businesses in towns and rural communities.
  • Tackle social challenges such as unemployment, housing insecurity, and mental health through mission-driven business models.
  • Lead environmental change by championing sustainable practices, circular economy principles, and responsible resource management.

As social enterprises around the world gain momentum, Tasmania must seize the opportunity to position itself as a hub for impact-driven business, ensuring that our communities and economy benefit from this growing movement.

Who is Beyond SECTAS?

Building on the work to-date of SENTAS, we have decided to focus our next phase on growing local connection, leadership and collective action. We see this as vital to grow the social enterprise sector and impact in Tasmania. This comes with a name change from SENTAS to SECTAS – the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania – with the change taking affect as we launch memberships.

As members gather and help us set the direction, we have four key elements in making this organisation everything it needs to be for Tasmania.

Members First

The focus of the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania is bringing the voice of social enterprises and passionate supporters to the fore. Members will be invited to our digital chat platform to share and collaborate, and this will ensure the priorities of members are the priorities of SECTAS.

Steering Committee

The conversations and the focus of the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania will be curated by a group of members who put their hand up to join the Steering Committee. This allows voices to be heard, strategic insights shared, and participate in state and national conversations authentically.

Governance

The Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania is underpinned by Social Enterprise Australia’s governance. While we will follow the code of conduct and be good humans, this support reduces our focus on governance matters – and helps us to ensure every effort is focused on helping Tasmanian social enterprises.

Secretariat

Local impact and business advisory organisation The van Diemen Project are helping with the essential admin for the Social Enterprise Collective of Tasmania, helping reduce overheads and meaning more funds are directed to support social enterprises and our needs across Tasmania.

A Collective of Changemakers – Join Us!

We are a collective of social entrepreneurs, impact-driven businesses, and supporters of good business who know that we are stronger together.
